Bolivia
Tours
It is comforting to experience Bolivia and realize that modern culture has
never succeeded in replacing age old tradition and a way of life virtually
unchanged for centuries. Though in La Paz you will see men in business suits
and women in blue jeans, alongside there will be Indian women in derby hats
and colorful petticoats nine layers deep.
As most of the country lives at altitudes
of more than 2 miles above sea level, there is a sense that when the women
in the Witches Market offer a cure for sickness and a prescription for wealth
and love, that perhaps their proximity to heaven affords their potions a
strength not encountered elsewhere. The high altitude of Lake
Titicaca , the highest
navigable lake in the world, is mystical not only in feeling but, according
to many, in reality as well. This is where the Inca Empire is said to have
been founded, and legend has it that centuries ago the Incas made a yearly
sacred pilgrimage from Copacabana to the Sun Island.
