Itinerary
Day
1 : USA-GUATEMALA CITY
Depart USA to Guatemala City. Meeting and assistance upon
arrival and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2 : GUATEMALA CITY (B)
Guatemala City was founded after the earthquakes of 1773 destroyed
the original capital city, Antigua. Today's morning city
tour includes visits to Minerva Park to see the giant relief map
of Guatemala, to the Central Plaza to visit the National
Palace, Cathedral, and to the Central Market. Proceed to the civic
center to visit the "Miguel Angel Asturias" cultural center
and continue to the southern end of the city along Avenida
de Las Americas with its modern residential areas. Balance
of day at leisure.
Day 3 : GUATEMALA CITY-FLORES (CEIBAL) (B,L)
Early morning transfer to the airport for a short flight to
Flores. Transfer to Sayaxche, a commercial town on the La
Pasion River. Here you will take a short boat ride to the
archaeological site of Ceibal. Visit Complex "A", with Temples
showing evidence of the Toltek peaceful invasion to this
region.
Transfer to your hotel for overnight.
Day 4 : FLORES - TIKAL -GUATEMALA CITY (B,L)
Transfer to Tikal, the great Mayan city, located in a tropical
forest. It contains ruins that are among the most impressive
in the world. Visit the main plaza, surrounded by the famous
Grand Jaguar Temple, Temple of the Masks, altars, palaces
and more. Proceed to the museum to admire the Mayan artifacts
of pottery and jade jewels. Fly to Guatemala City and transfer
to your hotel.
Day 5 : GUATEMALA CITY- CHICHICASTENANGO- PANAJACHEL (B)
Today you will drive to Lake Atitlan, located at an altitude
of 1580 meters; it is surrounded by three enchanting volcanoes
and 12 Indian communities. Continue to the town of Chichicastenango
to visit the impressive open air market. Then on to the church
of Santo Tomas, built on the remains of a Mayan temple. Continue
to the town of Panajachel on the shores of the lake and transfer
to your hotel.
Day 6 : PANAJACHEL-SANTIAGO ATITLAN-ANTIGUA (B)
Cross Lake Atitlan by boat to the picturesque town of Santiago
Atitlan. It is home to the Tuztuil Indians, who have preserved
their Mayan religious practices. Continue to the city of Antigua
for overnight.
Day 7 : ANTIGUA-GUATEMALA CITY (B)
Antigua was the third capital city of Guatemala founded by
the Spaniards in 1541. The city was destroyed by a series
of earthquakes in 1773 and the capital was moved to Guatemala
City. Antigua still contains some of the region's finest
examples of 16th, 17th and 18th century Spanish colonial architecture
and it is a UNESCO "World Heritage" site. A full day tour
visits the Capucinas Convent, La Merced church, Central Plaza,
Cathedral, San Carlos University, San Francisco church, Ciudad
Vieja and Aguas Calientes. Return to Guatemala City for overnight.
Day 8 : GUATEMALA CITY-COPAN (HONDURAS)-ZACAPA (B)
Today you will drive east, crossing the country's desert area
to the Honduran border to visit the impressive Mayan ruins
of Copan. A Mayan capital from the 5th to 9th century AD,
it is considered as a cosmic observation center, and one of
the largest and most impressive of all the Mayan centers discovered
to date. Visit the site and see the altars, stellaes, hieroglyphic
stairs, and more. Continue to the town of Zacapa for overnight
Day 9 : ZACAPA-QUIRIGUA-PUERTO BARRIOS (B)
Continue your tour this morning to Quirigua, in the region
of Izabal, a fabulous Mayan observation center. You can admire
the stellaes surrounding the small plaza, as well as temples
immersed in a tropical forest. The tallest Mayan stellaes
and zoomorphics beautifully worked in sandstone can be seen
here. Continue to the Caribbean port of Puerto Barrios for
overnight.
Day 10 : LIVINGSTON-RIO DULCE-SAN FELIPE-GUATEMALA CITY
(B)
Embark on a ferry boat at the Caribbean port of Puerto Barrios,
and cross the Bahia de Amatique Bay to the town of Livingston.
Continue sailing Rio Dulce to the shores of Lake Izabal. Here
you will visit the fortress of San Felipe de Lara, built in
1642 to keep the pirates from looting the villages and commercial
caravans of Izabal. Continue to Guatemala City for overnight.
Day 11 : GUATEMALA CITY-USA (B)
After breakfast, transfer to Guatemala City Airport for your
flight home.
