Itinerary
Day
1 : USA - SAN PEDRO SULA
Departure from USA. Meeting and assistance upon arrival in
San Pedro Sula, transfer to your hotel. Balance of the day
at leisure. Overnight in San Pedro Sula.
Day 2: SAN PEDRO SULA - COPAN (B)
The Spanish Conquistador Don Pedro de Alvarado founded San
Pedro Sula in 1536, originally named "Villa de San Pedro de
Puerto Caballos". Today, San Pedro Sula is the most dynamic
city and industrial capital of Honduras. Your city tour includes
visits to the Cathedral, City Hall, Pedestrian's street,
and
the local market place Guamilito. In the afternoon, depart
for Copan. After a stop at the village of La Entrada for
a
brief visit to the market, enjoy the beautiful countryside
as you travel on to the picturesque village of Copan Ruinas.
During the drive you will be offered information about Mayan
trade routes, social and political organization, and theories
on their mysterious demise. Overnight in Copan.
Day 3: COPAN (B)
Today you will visit the legendary Archaeological Park of
Copan, which consists of two main sites: the ruins and the
sepulchres. Enjoy the impressive 63-step stairway with over
2,500 hieroglyphs and masterfully carved Stelaes. In the
afternoon you will visit "Las Sepulturas", a residential and burial
site of the Mayan Nobles. Overnight in Copan.
Day 4: COPAN - SANTA ROSA - GRACIAS (B)
Today, drive along the Pan American Highway to Santa Rosa.
On the way, a brief visit to Santa Rosa de Copan, the most
important city in Western Honduras. You will tour a local
tobacco factory and observe the manual production of the
world famous Honduran cigars. Reach Gracias in the afternoon. Gracias
was founded in 1536 by Captain Juan de Chavez. Its original
name was "Gracias a Dios"; apparently the Spanish conquistador
had spent several days in this mountainous area looking for
a place to establish a city. When he finally found an area
flat enough to build it, his first words were "gracias a Dios
que hemos hallado tierra llana", which means "thank God we
finally found flat land". Gracias still retains much of its
original atmosphere, which you will experience on the tour
of the historical sites and churches. Overnight in Gracias.
Day 5: GRACIAS - LA CAMPA - GRACIAS (B)
After breakfast you will visit the Fort of San Cristobal,
located in a small mountain offering the best views of the
valley and the city. From here you can see all three churches
in Gracias, the picturesque cemetery, and the impressive mountain
of Celaque located behind the fort. In the afternoon you will
visit the Lenca community of La Campa, located only 10 miles
from Gracias in a very scenic little town known for ceramic
products. In the afternoon return to Gracias. Rest of the
day at leisure; you may wish to enjoy the local natural hot
springs. Overnight.
Day 6: GRACIAS- YOJOA LAKE - PULHAPANZAK WATERFALLS (B)
Continue your trip to the Yojoa Lake. After having settled
in your hotel, you will visit the Pulhapanzak Waterfalls,
the most impressive in the country. This beautiful location,
an important cultural site for the ancient Maya, invites you
for a refreshing bath in its clear waters. On the way back
to the hotel you will drive through several fruit, coffee,
and sugar cane plantations. Overnight at a hotel near the
lake.
Day 7: YOJOA LAKE -PULHAPANZAK WATERFALLS- SAN PEDRO SULA
(B)
Enjoy bird watching while on a morning walk. The Yojoa lake,
due to its elevation and geographical location, attracts the
greatest concentration of birds in the country. Approximately
400 of the 700 species registered in Honduras live around
this lake. In the late afternoon return to San Pedro Sula
for overnight.
Day 8: SAN PEDRO SULA -USA (B)
After breakfast, transfer to San Pedro Sula Airport for your
flight home.
