IQUITOS
Day
8: LIMA-IQUITOS- CEIBA TOPS (B,L,D)
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Iquitos on the shores of the legendary Amazon River. This region is covered by dense vegetation and by primary and secondary jungle with low hills and slightly rolling landscape, crisscrossed by the many rivers of the Amazon River basin, which is born at the confluence of the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers. Transfer to the Explorama dock. Twenty-five mile journey down the Amazon River to Ceiba Tops where private rooms with air conditioning and hot water provide all of the comforts of home.
Afternoon
hike in the beautiful primary rainforest reserve surrounding
Ceiba Tops which includes many huge trees festooned with
epiphytes. After dinner there may be local flute or guitar
music at the El Toucan Bar or the guides are always ready
to relate some of the many legends of the Amazon forest.
Lunch, dinner and overnight at Ceiba Tops.
Day 9: CEIBA TOPS (B,L,D)
Morning boat ride, spotting for dolphins, to visit a small
village of Yagua Indians where your guide will explain
the Yagua Indian culture and how it was affected by the
arrival of Europeans and the passing of time. There will
also be an opportunity to see some of the local crafts
and for a demonstration of the blowgun which some of
the Yagua elders still use for hunting. Afternoon walking
excursion to the neighboring town of Indiana stopping
along the way to see the immense Ceiba tree for which
the lodge is named. Originally a Franciscan mission,
Indiana has grown into a large river community with its
own market, high school and small hospital.. Breakfast,
Lunch, dinner and overnight at Ceiba Tops.
Day 10: IQUITOS-LIMA-USA (B)
Early morning departure by boat from Ceiba Tops to Iquitos followed by transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima and connecting flight home.

CHOICE #2:
PUERTO MALDONADO
Day
8: LIMA - PUERTO MALDONADO - POSADAS AMAZONAS (B,L,D)
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado. Meeting upon arrival and drive to the lodge town office. While enjoying your first taste of the forest in the office gardens, you will be asked to pack only the necessary gear for your next two days, and leave the rest at the office safe deposit. This helps keep the boats and cargo light. Transfer to the river pier for a forty five minute boat ride to Posada Amazonas, which will take you into the Community’s Primary Forest Private Reserve.
A twenty-minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30-meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. From atop you obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then toucans, parrots or macaws are seen flying against the horizon, or mixed species canopy flocks land in the treetop next to you. Evening presentation on the Inferno eco-tourism project is available every night from a staff member.
Day 9: POSADAS AMAZONAS (B,L,D)
Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake: Tres Chimbadas is thirty minutes by boat and forty five minutes hiking from Posada Amazonas. Once there you will paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of our lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers.
Parrot clay lick: This
clay lick is only a twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas.
From a blind located about twenty meters away you will
see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear
mornings to ingest the clay on a river bank. Species such
as Mealy and Yellow- headed Amazon, Blue-headed Parrot
and Dusky headed Parakeet descend at this clay lick. The
clay lick is most active at dawn and during the late mornings
and mid-afternoons.
Ethno botanical Tour: A twenty minute boat drive downriver
leads you to a trail designed by the staff of the Centro Ñape. The Centro Ñape is a communal organization that produces medicines out of forest plants and administers them to patients who choose their little clinic. They have produced a trail which explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants. Night walk. You will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.
Day 10: PUERTO MALDONALDO - LIMA - HOME (B)
Retrace your river and road journey back to Puerto Maldonado and on to the airport for your departure flight to Lima and connecting flight home.
